Planning your Maternity Photoshoot

Plan for it - early!

Planning your Maternity Photoshoot all comes down to timing! If this is something that’s important to you and you want to remember your pregnancy forever, it’s important to make plans as early as possible. Most photographers will ask you to book around 32 – 36 weeks for a nice sized belly bump, without it being too uncomfortable for you.

Do some research – early! Start looking for your favourite photographers, book in your session early so it’s not a mad rush because you left it until the last minute.

Decide if it’s a family affair or a ‘mum only’ photo session

Remember, planning your maternity photoshoot takes a lot more time and effort to organise with more people involved. Outfits for everyone, allowing enough preparation time for everyone, packing non-messy snacks for little one’s, ironing, etc.

Maybe you want some self-care time to pamper yourself with a relaxing & quiet photo session, just for yourself as a gift or this could be a present to your significant other…The choice is yours!

Decide on a studio or outdoor session

Here are some important things to consider about location when planning your maternity photoshoot:

Studio – you can book a studio session anytime giving you flexibility for getting ready and travel time. Studio sessions can also offer versatility in traditional and lifestyle portraits.

Outdoor location – most photographers will suggest a session time of sunrise or sunset for the best lighting conditions. Outdoor sessions offer a much more relaxed, authentic ‘lifestyle’ feeling in your photographs.

It all comes down to personal preference!  Your choice of photographer ultimately depends on the style of session you want and the style of photographs you love.

How to Prepare for your Maternity Shoot:

  • Choose an outfit you feel comfortable in but also looks professional. If you would like to have different looks or outfits for the photo shoot, choose clothes that you can change in and out of easily and that don’t leave any marks on your skin (like straps). Go for outfits that really show off your bump – empire dresses are great for this. I also have a small range of options for maternity sessions as well as a lengthy list of recommended maternity clothing suppliers. Two I highly recommended looking at are Eden Elizabeth & Mama Rentals. We also have a guide on planning your Maternity Photography Wardrobe.

  • Your photo shoot is a perfect opportunity to get some much-needed pampering and professional hair and makeup done pre-baby so why not have it done prior to your shoot. I can provide you with a list of recommended hair and makeup artists to suit your needs.

  • If you are bringing your partner, family member or friend for photos, aim to coordinate your outfits, but don’t necessarily match. White and denim is always a popular choice. We also suggest avoiding bold logos or anything that may be distracting in your images.

  • Lastly, drink plenty of water the day before your session so that your skin is well hydrated and try to get some much-needed rest the night prior to your shoot so that you feel fresh and look radiant in your photos!
